Copybooks, [ca. 1850].

Consists of four volumes containing writing exercises. The first is entitled "Specimens of Penmanship : Common School Writing Book," published by R.S. Davis in Boston. The front and back covers feature engravings of a harp, a city scene, a globe, books, and other designs. The second volume was also published by Davis. It contains a multiplication table on the front cover and an ad for Davis' store on the back cover. The thir volume was manufactured and sold by Tappan, Whittemore & Mason of Boston, Ma. The front cover has an illustration of children gathering nuts. The back cover is entitled "Lessons in drawing," and includes depictions of fruit, animals, a house, a sailboat, and body parts. The fourth volume was manufactured by R.H. Sherburne. Its front cover features an engraving of Boston school boys asking permission to join the procession at the celebration of the completion of the Bunker Hill Monument in 1843. The back cover contains an advertisement for Sherburne's business.
